Anthony Thieme ( 1888-1954)

While growing up in the Netherlands Thieme always wanted to be an artist.  His parents didn’t agree with his wishes and sent him to Naval School  As soon as he could, he enrolled in Holland’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts and then studied t The Hague.

At the age of 17, Thieme left for America and became one of the most distinguished painters in American art.  Born Antonius Johannes Thieme in Rotterdam, the artist is more remembered in the U.S. than in his native country.  His reputation as a leading landscape and marine painter and a premier figure of the Rockport School has lasted to this day.
